Gerald Dean Unick

Gerald was born and raised in Ferndale, Washington. He was one of the four children of Lee and Mae (Pearson) Unick. He graduated from Ferndale High in 1943 and from there started serving in the US Army as WWII was in full swing. He volunteered and was accepted in the paratrooper program and started jumping for the 82nd Airborne, in England, Belgium and France. He was always excited to share his stories and the pictures he had from this time. Gerald married Edna (Fox) Unick in 1949 and together they were able to celebrate 63 years of marriage before she passed in 2013. After his Army Service, Gerald held many jobs before finally retiring from Intalco. These included the Bellingham Coal Mines and the City of Ferndale. He was also a retired volunteer for the Ferndale Fire Department. Gerald enjoyed watching his Mariner games or heading to the casino to play a few dollars (and always win!) on the slot machines. He also had standing date’s playing cards with his sons and the rat at his kitchen table and watching or playing shuffleboard and cornhole at his favorite watering holes. Gerald was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Edna; his parents, Lee and Mae Unick; his sister and brothers, Gladys, Dwayne and Galen; and many other friends and family. He is survived by his sons, Rick Unick and Ron (Corrine) Unick; his granddaughter, Erin (Jason) York and grandson Taylor (Zoe) Unick; and his two great-grandchildren Quinn Unick and Parker York; and numerous nieces and nephews. We are thankful for all the wonderful people that have surrounded Grandpa with love since Grandma passed away. Grandpa will be greatly missed, but his stories and the history of our family will live on through the generations. We know he is happy up there, back in the arms of Grandma. Per his request, there will be no service.
